Volkswagen Polo, one of the best looking cars in the premium small car segment, is elegant and sporty, thanks to its sharp design. Competing with the likes of the Ford Figo, Maruti Suzuki Ritz, Maruti Suzuki Swift, Tata Indica Vista, Skoda Fabia, Hyundai i20 and Fiat Punto, the Polo has a composed handling even at high speeds and promises a comfortable ride.
Introduced in Europe in 1975, the Polo was launched in India in 2010.
The Polo has a clean and contemporary look and is distinctively Volkswagen. The indicator headlights are found to blend in with the chrome trimmed radiator grille that houses the Volkswagen logo. The front fog lights integrated into the front bumper and the 7 spoke alloy wheels give the car a sporty look.
The interiors are done in beige and chrome. The dash board is scratch free and the instrument panel has an electronic multi-function display. The steering wheel and gear shift lever is leather wrapped, the steering wheel with tilt and telescopic adjusts. The entertainment system includes a CD and MP3 music system with four speakers. The front and back seats have ample lateral support and plenty of leg and head space. The top variants have a rear defogger and a rear wiper. There is a large boot space of 280 liters for the Polo.
Safety features include ABS for top variants, dual front airbags, electronic anti-theft immobilizer and central lock system. The braking system is disc type at the front and drum type at the rear. The 168 mm ground clearance coupled with an effective suspension helps to soak up the bumps with ease.
Polo comes as ten variants in India, six petrol variants and four diesel ones. The 1.2 liter petrol variants (trend line, comfort line, high line and SR edition) come with three cylinders and create 78 bhp with 110 Nm torque. The 1.2 liter diesel versions (trend line, comfort line and high line) also come with three cylinders and create 74 bhp with 180 Nm torque. There is a 1.6 liter petrol version with four cylinders as well (1.6 L high line). TSI version has an auto transmission gear system and a 1.2 liter turbocharged petrol engine under the hood. The diesel variant TDI has a 1.6 liter 250 Nm torque diesel engine with four cylinders.
The Volkswagen Polo comes in the price range of Rs. 5.10 lakhs to Rs. 8.10 lakhs. Volkswagen had unveiled a new Polo facelift at the Geneva Motor Show 2014 and will be launched in the Indian market in July 2014. The face-lifted Polo will have a new 1.5-liter 4-cylinder diesel motor which has been downsized and is expected to make the same power and torque figures.
