The home-grown automaker, Mahindra is gearing up to launch its premium MPV, Mahindra U321. The car is currently in its testing phase and has been spotted occasionally on the Indian roads. The sales of the Mahindra cars witnessed a drop by 30 percent in the first fiscal year of 2017, while the company is looking forward to better its position in the MPV segment.
The Mahindra U321 comes with a boxy appearance with several premium touches over the body. The company is looking forward to it and has invested a huge sum in its manufacturing hub at Nasik to develop the infrastructure. Mahindra is bidding hugely in the upcoming MPV and it is most likely to be showcased at the Auto Expo 2018 in February.
Let’s see what can we expect from the upcoming MPV from Mahindra.
Visually, the Mahindra MPV U321 is a massive sized car, similar to the current-gen Toyota Innova Crysta. It has been spied several times during its testing on the Indian roads. The spy images reveal a lot about the car. The design philosophy of the car is based on the monocoque platform, which makes it lighter than other cars in the segment. In terms of design, the MPV receives a few signature attributes of the company’s SUV, which includes a chrome-bordered toothed grille, large projector headlamps with a set of LED daytime running lights and a sculpted front bumper with large air-dam. The muscular side profile receives creases all around with aesthetically designed curves at the right places. The car is expected to sport alloy wheels. At the rear-end, the car gets LED taillamps along with a rear spoiler.
Coming to the interior of the car, the seven-seater Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) offers a spacious cabin, as it sits on a large wheelbase. The cabin is expected to receive dual tone theme of black and beige colour combination along with a new dashboard. The premium look of the cabin is equally well complemented by the technical goodies present. The 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system of the car is similar to that present in the Mahindra XUV500, which is compatible with the Android Auto and Auto CarPlay. It gets the connectivity features of USB and Bluetooth for the buyer’s convenience.
The lower trim of the car gets a fabric seat upholstery, while the top-end unit receives fine quality leather seats. Other convenience features include a multi-functional steering wheel, automatic climate control, keyless entry and more. On the safety front, the car is equipped with multiple airbags, rear parking camera and ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) with EBD.
Under the hood, the MPV from Mahindra is most likely to get the company’s new 1.6-litre mFalcon diesel engine, which will be offered in the base variants only. Apart from this, the higher variants will get the tried and tested 2.2-litre mHawk engine, which is present in the Mahindra XUV500 as well. The engine churns out a maximum power output of 140 bhp against a peak torque of 330 Nm. The engine is mated to a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox.
The Indian-spec model is expected to receive a petrol engine variant as well. It will get a new 1.5-litre petrol engine, which has been developed under the collaboration with the Korean subsidiary, SsangYong.
What to expect?
Mahindra U321 MPV will be up against the segment leader, Toyota Innova Crysta and is most likely to be priced competitively to bring on a stiff competition in the segment. The exterior design of the car looks to be attractive, equally well complemented by the delights of the interior along with several goodies. One can expect some powerful performance, just like the Mahindra XUV500 from the car.
